Maine Has One of the Best Diner Chains in America (Kind Of)
There are plenty of awesome diners in Maine, but one of the chains here was recently named to a list highlighting the absolute best.
Listen, we get it—Maine knows diners, and we all agree that Dysart’s would top just about any diner-related or diner-adjacent list. But the publication we’re looking at focused strictly on national chains, which means our beloved truck stop didn’t even get a chance to compete.

So, with that in mind, how is it even determined that one diner chain is better than another—let alone the best in all of America?
Cheapism’s list of ‘The Best Diner Chains in America’ was compiled by staff writer Lacey Muszynski, who brings over 15 years of food and travel writing experience to the table. Her picks focus on diner chains that offer comforting, no-frills meals, affordable prices, and a dash of nostalgic Americana—perfect for when you need breakfast for dinner or a midnight burger on the road.
Well, having said all that, which diner chain on Cheapism’s list can actually be found in our Pine Tree State?
According to Cheapism and their list titled ‘The Best Diner Chains in America,’ out of the seven chains mentioned, the only one with a Maine location is Johnny Rockets. Cheapism had the following to say about their selection:
Johnny Rockets really plays up the nostalgic diner aesthetic, and while it’s a little over the top, we appreciate a themed restaurant as long as you know what you’re getting into. Unlike most of the diner chains on this list, this one focuses on lunch and dinner instead of breakfast — in fact, there is no breakfast.
The only Johnny Rockets in Maine can be found in South Portland, inside the Maine Mall food court.
So, while we technically have a Johnny Rockets, it’s not in a classic diner setting—it’s in a food court. Other chains mentioned by Cheapism include Cracker Barrel, Metro Diner, Black Bear Diner, Perkins, First Watch, and Waffle House.
There you have it—of all the diner chains named among the best in America (at least according to this list), Maine only has one. And it’s Johnny Rockets… kind of.
What are your thoughts on Cheapism’s picks? What’s your favorite diner chain? We’d love to hear from you—feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
