Maine ranked fifth in the nation for UFO reports per capita, according to an analysis of 140,235 National UFO Reporting Center records and 2025 U.S. Census population estimates.
Our state recorded 1,270 reports, with researchers noting that the ranking reflects how frequently sightings are reported rather than what people may have actually seen.

Based on reports through March 7th, 2026, Maine had about 89.8 reports per 100,000 residents, more than double the 50-state average of 41.1.
Maine finished just ahead of neighboring New Hampshire, while the statewide total reflects reports from across the state rather than any single hotspot.
A UFO report does not prove alien activity, as the crowdsourced accounts may include misidentified aircraft, satellites, weather balloons or astronomical events.
Analysts calculated the rates using reports with valid state codes and July 1st, 2025, Census population estimates, with the resulting figures checked again in August.
And there you have it! Maine’s rate of reported UFO sightings was more than twice the national average in this analysis.
