Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss says Troopers responded to the crash at mile 68 northbound on the Turnpike in New Gloucester at approximately 3:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a tractor-trailer that had left the roadway and partially rolled over. An initial investigation into the crash indicates that the truck driver lost control of the rig and struck the median guardrail before being redirected back off the road. The truck cab remained upright while the trailer rolled onto its side. Officials say the trailer was fully loaded with oranges so the Department of Agriculture was contacted.

The tractor-trailer, owned by DW Carrier INC of Fresno, California, sustained major damage in the crash. Officials determined that the combination of freezing rain and the daunting task of unloading the trailer and removing the rig should be put off until Thursday.

Drivers Thursday on the Maine Turnpike are Advised of a Traffic Disruption

Drivers are advised that there will be a lane closure in that area of the Maine Turnpike at around 9 am, while crews remove the truck and its contents. Until then, the tractor-trailer remains on the side of the Turnpike. Officials say the rig is off the roadway and its location is marked by orange barrels.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
