Here's a quick look at the movie, the lighthouse scene, and the lighthouse itself.

'Forrest Gump' Features Maine

Forrest Gump is a 1994 comedy-drama film starring Tom Hanks.

The plot centers around Forrest, who, despite his own limitations, lives an extraordinary life, meeting historical figures and finding himself involved in historical events.

It was a major box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film in the United States in 1994 (over $329 million) and the second-highest-grossing film worldwide that year (nearly $678 million), second only to The Lion King (over $763 million).

The film also won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Tom Hanks), and Best Director (Robert Zemeckis).

The lighthouse in 'Forrest Gump'

The Marshall Point Light Station is located in Port Clyde, the southernmost village on the St. George peninsula, in the Knox County town of St. George. The town is located within Maine's Midcoast region.

According to the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum, the original lighthouse was built in 1832 with a 20-foot tower and seven lard oil lamps with 14-inch reflectors.

A new 24-foot tower was built in 1858, and the lamps were replaced with a Fresnel lens.

The museum says the light was automated in 1971, and in 2018, the Coast Guard removed the Fresnel lens and replaced the automated light with an LED light encased in plastic.

The Maine Scene in 'Forrest Gump'

After Jenny, Forrest's childhood friend and later his wife, leaves him, he walks off the porch of his Alabama home and starts running.

Forrest runs all over the country, a journey that lasted three years, two months, 14 days, and 16 hours.

At one point during the trek, Forrest runs up the wooden walkway leading to the Marshall Point Lighthouse.

When he reaches the lighthouse, he stops and pauses for a moment and then turns around and starts running again.

Why did Forrest run?

Initially, he said, "for no particular reason."

But later, he offers another explanation.

"My momma always said, 'you got to put the past behind you, before you can move on.' And I think that's what my running was all about."

Of all the movie scenes filmed in Maine, this is one of the more memorable ones.

Maybe it's because the movie is iconic, and it's one of the more quotable films ever made.

It's always fun to see your home state on the big screen, especially when it's featured in such a memorable movie.
