Legendary Bangor Bar Up For Lease

If you've spent any time in Downtown Bangor, you've at the very least crossed paths with the McGuire building, home to both the "Greetings From Bangor" mural, The Robinson Ballet, and the "Hopeful" sign.

Located on the corner of Main and Union Streets, this building is also home to one of the oldest bars in Bangor, The Main Tavern... or as many simply refer to it, The Tavern.

According to their Facebook Page, Main Tavern owners, Peter and Deb Brountas, have decided to fully embrace retirement and put the legendary bar up for lease.

"After much reflection and prayer, we have decided to lease the space which currently houses The Main Tavern. Stay tuned for additional information on the historic opportunity to lease commercial space at the corner of Main and Union, an offering not presented in 85+ years."

In the post, they go on to thank all of those who have stopped in for drinks or karaoke over the years, and those who have worked for them.

The owners say they plan to celebrate the holidays with their friends and patrons before hanging up the towel.

"We've had numerous offers to purchase the building as well as several people wanting to lease the space before we announced our retirement. We do plan to continue with our current schedule of Friday and Saturday nights 8pm-1am through the Holiday Season. We'll be serving pies, cookies, and breads on Christmas as in years past. ( We've always tried to provide a warm and caring 'Home" for the Holidays' atmosphere for our regulars."

The Tavern has been operational since the 1930s. It will be strange not to see its uniquely decorated windows when driving along the main drag in Bangor.
