Authorities are still looking into what caused a deadly crash in the Washington County town of Milbridge Wednesday afternoon.

Maine State Police say they know the accident happened on Route 1 in Milbrige just before 2:30 p.m.

" The initial investigation indicates that 79-year-old Clyde Samuelson Jr. of Columbia was traveling east on Route 1 in a 2011 Ford pickup truck when the vehicle left the roadway on the north side and entered a ditch between Route 1 and the Sunrise Trail. Samuelson was the sole occupant of the vehicle. First responders removed Samuelson from the vehicle and initiated life-saving measures, but unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Authorities say that they were able to keep traffic moving around the scene yesterday with the help of local support from the Milbrige Fire Department and the local sheriff deputies.

According to Maine.gov, Route 1 in Milbridge is a significant north-south highway traversing the state's eastern part. It's a major artery, part of the US Numbered Highways system, and connects various towns and attractions.
